Why Zambia is Emerging as a Key Market for Utility-Scale Solar De

Zambia is increasingly recognised as a compelling market for utility-scale solar development, driven by a combination of structural energy challenges and favourable natural conditions.

The country has historically relied heavily on hydroelectric generation, which has provided a strong foundation for the national power supply. However, variability in rainfall and growing demand have emphasised the need to diversify the energy mix and improve resilience.

Solar power presents a natural complement. Zambia benefits from strong solar irradiation levels, making it well-suited to large-scale photovoltaic projects capable of delivering reliable and cost-effective generation.

At the same time, demand for electricity continues to grow across industrial, commercial, and residential sectors. This creates a clear requirement for additional capacity, particularly generation that can be deployed more quickly than traditional infrastructure.

From a development perspective, several factors make Zambia particularly attractive.

First, there is an increasing policy focus on renewable energy, with government engagement supporting project development and private sector participation.

Second, certain regions already have key transmission infrastructure in place, allowing for the development of grid-connected projects within existing corridors.

Third, there is growing interest from international investors and development finance institutions in supporting energy projects across sub-Saharan Africa, particularly those aligned with sustainability and energy transition objectives.

That said, successful project development still requires a structured approach. Early-stage work, such as feasibility studies, environmental assessments, grid analyses, and stakeholder engagement, remains critical to advancing projects toward bankability.

As the market continues to evolve, Zambia represents a strong example of how solar energy can play a central role in supporting both energy security and economic growth.

Projects currently being advanced in the region reflect this broader trend toward structured, utility-scale solar development.
